Philippe Geluck’s famous cat character Le Chat has been on the move for several months. It appeared in the form of giant sculptures on the Champs Elysées in Paris, and can currently be seen in Bordeaux, from where it will head for Caen, Saint-Tropez, Milan and then Geneva.
In short, “the Cat is roaming”, as its creator Philippe Geluck likes to say.
But the Cat also likes to go home once in a while. So Philippe Geluck, who was born and raised in the Brussels municipality of Etterbeek, has organised a break at the Sofitel Brussels Europe on Place Jourdan.
“I spent my childhood in Place Jourdan”, explains the humourist from the Rooftop on the 7th floor. And he recalls how the square used to be lined by small shops, long since gone and now replaced by restaurants and other stores. So the Sofitel will be something of a homecoming for his Cat.
There is a bronze sculpture in the original 50cm size at the hotel entrance to welcome visitors. In the lobby, around fifteen original works – acrylic paint on canvas – are displayed, visible from all sides and from the corridor on the first floor.
Other works are exhibited opposite the lifts on each of the seven floors. And, for Cat-enhanced slumber, the 5-star hotel’s 12 suites are decorated with limited edition silkscreen and digital prints. The speech bubbles are in French or English.
This exhibition cements the cultural links which the French group’s hotels want to establish and maintain with the communities they serve and with the people who live there.
The exhibition at the Sofitel on Place Jourdan runs until the end of October 2021.
