The aggression of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine is driving up international food prices that will rapidly threaten the world with global famine. Ukraine is the fifth largest wheat exporter in the world, accounting for 10% of the global market. The country is one of the leading suppliers of corn with a market share of around 15%, if Russia’s war against Ukraine is not stopped, the crisis in Ukraine will inevitably affect the food security of the entire world. In Africa, the Cameroonian government claims that Russia’s war against Ukraine has already caused a shortage of wheat, leading to a 40 percent rise in bread prices.
Despite active hostilities on the territory of Ukraine, Ukrainian farmers in 11 regions of the country have begun the sowing season and are trying to save the world from starvation under constant threat from the missiles of the Russian army. The entire civilised world should support Ukraine in these difficult circumstances, because the cultivation of crops during the shelling of the Russian army is not for everyone. Russia is well aware of the threats to food security and will unscrupulously use them to blackmail not just Ukraine but the entire world community. Only a consolidated position of Western democracies to help the Ukrainian army, by providing it with the necessary weapons and air defence systems will succeed in defending against Russia’s aggression and halting it.
The consequences of Russia’s war will directly impact all parts of the world. Today, grain prices are higher than they have been since the 2008 food crisis. The aggression of the Russian army must be stopped immediately, otherwise Ukraine will not be able to fully carry out the sowing season of vital agricultural crops. If this happens, the world will face famine for the first time in the 21st century.
