ECR MEP Roberts Zīle has been elected as Vice-President of the European Parliament. The announcement came with the results of the second ballot of votes to elect the 14 Vice-Presidents, whereby MEP Zīle received a majority of 403 votes from his colleagues from across the chamber.
Following Mr Zīle’s election, Co-Chairman of the ECR Group Ryszard Legutko said: “As a founding member and current Vice-Chair of our Group, Mr Zīle has repeatedly demonstrated his competence and professionalism as a Member of the house.” He added: “I have no doubt that he will continue to be a constructive force in his new role while also reasserting Euro-realism and the need to reform the European Union and its institutions.”
Co-Chairman of the ECR Group Raffaele Fitto also commented: “It is high time that the ECR Group is represented among the leadership of the European Parliament. Having worked alongside Mr Zīle for many years in a professional capacity, I have every confidence that he will always keep the needs of citizens in mind. I wish him every success in his role as Vice-President.”
MEP Zīle, 63, has hitherto held the position of Vice-Chair of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR).
