This year’s Relay for Life event, an annual fund raiser for cancer patients, will take place next month at St. John’s International School in Waterloo.
It is held on 24/5 June and is organised by the International Community and by Waterloo under the umbrella of the Foundation against Cancer.
Relay for Life is a festive and inspiring family event which brings communities together to show solidarity with cancer patients and raise awareness and critical funds for the fight against cancer.
The event spans 24 hours as a symbol that “cancer never sleeps.”
For cancer patients, the fight does not stop because they are tired – so, for one night at least, relay participants do not stop either.
During Relay for Life, team members of all ages take turns walking or running around a track for 24 hours. It is not a race but an invitation to go beyond one’s limit to support those affected by the disease. During the 24 hours, participants and visitors enjoy live entertainment, wellness and sports activities such as Zumba, stretching or salsa.
Kids can enjoy games and other arts and crafts activities while food and refreshments are on offer throughout.
The event is held under the patronage of Jesper Fredberg, CEO of Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht.
Whether you stay 24 hours or drop by for a show, a ceremony, or a drink, everyone is welcome to participate in their own way and own pace.
All funds raised during Relay for Life go directly to the Belgian Foundation against Cancer, which aims to advance the fight against cancer. To this end, the Foundation finances scientific research programmes throughout Belgium and also encourages healthy lifestyles, cancer prevention and screening. It also funds psychosocial projects that aim to improve the quality of life of cancer patients and their families.
A spokesman said, “None of this would be possible without solidarity and the sense that, together, we can beat cancer.”
A contribution of €40 or more is tax deductible.
If you have battled cancer or are currently undergoing treatment, you are the guest of honour of the Relay for Life event and can join other survivors in the VIP lounge, where food and drinks are available.
In addition, the organisers have prepared a pampering programme for cancer patients, including massages, acupressure, esthetic care and cristal bowl bath.
It runs non stop from 2pm on Saturday, 24 June to 2pm Sunday, 25 June and is at the campus of St. John’s International School, Champ du Roussart, 1410 Waterloo (back of the school).
Free for visitors and survivors and €10 for relayers
