This week, the LIBE Committee on Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs in the European Parliament held a first hearing and exchange of views on the spy scandal in Poland.
Shortly before Christmas it became known that mobile phones of prominent Polish figures had been hacked by the internationally known spyware Pegasus. Polish authorities had admitted they were in possession of that intrusion software. Polish prosecutor Ewa Wrzosek, whose phone was hacked, testified yesterday before the committee.
Terry Reintke, responsible on rule of law in Poland and Vice-President of the Greens/EFA Group in the European Parliament: “What we see is probably only the tip of the iceberg. To me it is very clear that we cannot move to business as usual. The European Parliament must set up an inquiry committee that brings light into this secret surveillance program of the Polish authorities. We must get clarity on who was or still is targeted, by whom and about what – in Poland and possibly in Europe.”
