MEPs are expected to adopt a report in the run-up to the 2020 Balkan summit that is scheduled for this spring in Zagreb. The report lists recommendations on the EU’s approach towards Balkan countries aspiring to join the European Union.
They will vote on the text prepared by the rapporteur Tonino Picula (S&D, HR) that largely deals with enlargement issues, only a few weeks after the Council finally decided to give the green light to start accession negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania.
The report recommends the EU’s approach towards Balkan countries and their aspirations to join the European Union, in the light of the revised EU enlargement methodology that the Commission presented in February.
Besides North Macedonia and Albania, Montenegro and Serbia have already started accession negotiations, while Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo are also potential candidates.
