On 4th May in 1945 General Sir Bernard Montgomery and Admiral Hans-Georg Friedrich Ludwig Robert von Friedeburg signed the unconditional surrender of the German armed forces (including the navy and naval vessels) in North West Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands at a camp in Lüneburger Heide in Germany.
This marked the beginning of partial peace at the end of World War Two, and is commemorated in Denmark by the lighting and placing of candles in homes on 4th May, and in the Netherlands by the national holiday of Liberation Day on 5th May.
The end to hostilities in Europe is commemorated on 8th May with VE Day,and the establishment of total peace on the European continent.
