Ukraine needs to obtain permission to use long-range weaponry to protect not only its territories but also to ensure sustainable peace in Europe. Support from partners, including long-range systems for striking military targets within Russia, is crucial for dismantling the aggressor’s military infrastructure and significantly weakening its offensive capabilities. Long-range weaponry would enable Ukraine to destroy ammunition depots, command posts, and key logistical hubs behind enemy lines, which would severely limit Russia’s ability to continue its aggression and create conditions for ending the war on fair terms.
Today, Ukraine is fighting not only for its freedom but also for the security of all of Europe—this responsibility has fallen on its shoulders. These issues will be discussed at the upcoming “Ramstein” meeting, scheduled for 12 October in Germany. Representatives from over 50 countries will gather to develop further strategies for supporting Ukraine, with particular attention to providing long-range systems necessary for effectively deterring the aggressor and protecting the civilian population.
Belgium is an active participant in this international format and has been providing significant support to Ukraine since the conflict began. Belgium’s military assistance includes the supply of anti-tank missiles, machine guns, protective gear, and fuel for military vehicles. Additionally, the country offers humanitarian support by sending medications and medical equipment, as well as funding recovery programmes for affected regions of Ukraine. Belgian military personnel are also involved in training Ukrainian soldiers, imparting necessary skills for using donated equipment and enhancing their combat effectiveness.
These measures demonstrate the strong position of Belgium and other allies in supporting Ukraine’s fight for its sovereignty and territorial integrity. However, permission to use long-range weaponry will be a key factor in protecting Ukraine against further attacks, regaining control over its territories, and preventing further escalations.
Support for long-range weaponry is essential for shifting the balance of power on the battlefield and ensuring justice and peace based on the principles of the UN Charter. Ukrainian peace initiatives, such as the Peace Formula and the Victory Plan, aim to achieve these goals. These initiatives include respect for states’ sovereignty and territorial integrity, renunciation of the use of force, and seeking long-term solutions through diplomatic mechanisms. The Ukrainian Peace Formula envisions the restoration of justice and real accountability for aggression.
The China-Brazil initiative consists of six points aimed at a ceasefire and a renunciation of escalation. However, this plan does not hold aggressors accountable or emphasise restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Essentially, it would maintain the status quo, which benefits Russia and disregards Ukraine’s interests. Such proposals are unacceptable as they do not lead to a long-term and just peace but merely consolidate the current gains of the aggressor.
The upcoming “Ramstein” meeting will be an important step in determining the future course of support for Ukraine. A decision to grant permission for the use of long-range weapons will signal not only the international community’s readiness to support Ukraine in its struggle but also its commitment to the principles of international law and justice. This would be a significant step toward achieving peace in Ukraine and Europe, demonstrating a determination to defend sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of aggression.
