According to an official statement from the Royal Office of His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco, the King has received a letter from the Prime Minister of the State of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu.
In this letter, the Israeli Prime Minister has announced the decision of the State of Israel to ‘recognise the sovereignty of Morocco over the territory of Western Sahara.’ The Israeli Prime Minister further indicated that his country’s position will be ‘reflected in all relevant acts and documents of the Israeli Government.’
He also stressed that the decision would be ‘transmitted to the United Nations, to regional and international organizations of which Israel is a member, and to all countries with which Israel maintains diplomatic relations.’
In his letter to the Sovereign, the Israeli Prime Minister also announced that Israel is positively examining ‘the opening of a consulate in the city of Dakhla,’ as part of the implementation of this state decision.
Responding to Netanyahu, King Mohammed expressed thanks for the letter and said that the decision “had been warmly received by the Moroccan people.” He went on to say that the clear position taken by Israel would “contribute to closer ties between Morocco and Israel, opening up new possibilities for bilateral relations.”
Separately Lord Stuart Polak of the British House of Lords welcomed the Israeli decision to recognise Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, saying it was “the right thing to do.”
“This recognition is a good sign and we are going to encourage the British Government to do the same,” Lord Polak said.
