The European Green Party has called on the European institutions to lead an independent investigation into the 2023 Tempi rail disaster that killed 57 people.
This comes in the wake of massive protests in Greece last weekend that, say the Greens, revealed the widespread frustration and deep mistrust towards the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis (New Democracy, member of the European People’s Party).
Vula Tsetsi, co-chair of the European Green Party, commented: “The protests show that the people of Greece distrust the Mitsotakis government. The people are right to demand justice for the victims, for the families, and for everyone.”
“The suffocation of the truth is the lack of oxygen that the citizens are denouncing. In the light of recent developments, we call on the European institutions to move forward with an independent investigation to uncover the full scope of responsibility.”
Ciarán Cuffe, co-chair of the European Green Party commented: “This was the biggest protest in Greece for more than a decade. The tens of thousands of demonstrators demanded not only answers, but also structural reforms to ensure accountability and prevent further tragedies. The European Greens join their voices in solidarity with the Greek citizens and support their call for justice and truth.”
Tens of thousands of citizens took to the streets in Athens, Thessaloniki and other cities, to demand transparency, accountability, and justice in the wake of the 2023 train disaster that killed 57 people. The demonstrations were sparked by growing concern over the government’s alleged lack of transparency about the exact cause of the victims’ deaths.
