Hungarian MEP József Szàjer (59) has resigned after attending a sex party in Brussels. He was apprehended by the Brussels police after shinning down a drainpipe to escape from the party, at which the participants had flagrantly violated Belgium’s lockdown measures.
There were about twenty persons present, two of whom claimed diplomatic immunity. Immunity from what, one might very well ask? Did these people think that COVID-19 can tell the difference between diplomats and the rest of the population? Those present at the party were all fined. Narcotics were found in Szàjer’s backpack, the public prosecutor reports.
The police had entered an apartment in Steenstraat, near the Grote Markt, after complaints from neighbours last Friday.
Szájer confirmed: “I was there”. He is one of the founding members of Fidesz, the right-wing nationalist party of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, which openly opposes equal rights for LGBT people. He was party leader in the Hungarian Parliament from 1994 to 2002 and co-authored an amendment to the Constitution to the effect that: “Hungary protects marriage as a union between a man and a woman.” There would appear to be some discrepancy between his publicly held opinions, and his private behaviour.
In a statement, Szájer admitted that he was present at the party. However, he does not elaborate on the nature of the event in his statement. He also denies using narcotics.
On Sunday, Szàjer announced his resignation as an MEP. In his statement, the man said he will pay the fine and apologised to his family, colleagues and voters for his behaviour.
