The European Conservatives and Reformists Group in the European Parliament condemns the escalation near the village of Kuźnica Białostocka, Poland, where a huge number of migrants under the control of armed Belarus units are set to destroy border fences and cross illegally into EU territory.
ECR Co-Chairman Prof Ryszard Legutko (Poland) said:
“The scenes that are taking place on the border between Poland and Belarus are a continuation of the Lukashenko regime’s attempt to use people as weapons in its hybrid warfare campaign to destabilise the Union. We expect a response from the EU in the strongest possible terms.
“Now is the moment of truth for Europe, in which it must prove its added value. A colossal responsibility rests on Poland. We are in a migratory crisis of new proportions. Poland is bearing the responsibility for protecting the eastern border of the European Union and, in turn, the security of all Europeans. The Union is aware of the fact that the situation of 2015 must not be repeated.”
ECR Co-Chairman Raffaele Fitto (Italy) said: “Two things are important now: First, we must not leave Poland alone in this situation. The EU must now support Poland in protecting its external borders with all its might. Secondly, as an immediate measure, we demand that airlines bringing refugees to Belarus be banned from European airspace.
“In the case of Lukashenko, we are dealing here with a ruthless dictator who is willing to sacrifice human lives for his own interests – fact witch he has repeatedly proven. We also call on NATO to take action and show Lukashenko the limits to his actions.”
