Following the dismissal of four members of Hong Kong’s Legislative Council today, the remaining 15 members of the pro-democracy opposition have said they will resign.
The four lawmakers who were dismissed by Hong Kong’s CEO Carrie Lam are Alvin Yeung, Kwok Ka-ki and Dennis Kwok of the Civic Party and Kenneth Leung of the Professionals Guild.
The dismissal was made on the basis of a special resolution adopted by the Chinese Government allowing Hong Kong’s government to dismiss politicians deemed a threat to national security.
“If observing due process and fighting for democracy can lead to being disqualified, it [disqualification] will be my honour,” Dennis Kwok said.
The remaining 15 lawmakers who make up the 19 strong bloc of pro-democracy members of the opposition in Hong Kong’s 70 seat legislative body have announced that they will submit letters of resignation tomorrow.
Human rights organisation Amnesty International has condemned the situation. “Bulldozing through arbitrary decisions via the Chinese government makes a mockery of the rule of law,” Asia-Pacific regional director Yamini Mishra has said.
