Thirty-two journalists have been killed in Russia’s war against Ukraine. Official enquiries into all deadly incidents are continuing
The Ukrainian Office of the Prosecutor General and regional prosecutors’ offices provide procedural guidance about criminal proceedings into crimes committed by Russian forces against 147 media representatives, including 28 foreign nationals. During the brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine, 32 media representatives have been killed and 16 injured.
Ukrainian, American, British, Czech, Danish, Irish, Lithuanian, Swiss, French, and UAE journalists have all suffered. Most incidents involving journalist casualties were reported in the Kyiv region and the city of Kyiv; but there have also been incidents in Zaporizhia, Donetsk, Luhansk, and Kherson regions.
Speaking to the media, Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova said, “Journalists are always the first on the scene where the situation is the most difficult – those documenting Kremlin’s madness have also become victims of Russian aggression and atrocities. Dear journalists, thank you for telling the world about the war. Your objective view is an antidote to poisonous Russian propaganda. Media attention is a guarantee of vital international support for Ukraine. To this end, you are also, of course, bringing closer the time when you will tell in the news about peace in our land.”
